History of Welly Wanging...

History of Welly Wanging

The Official Welly Wanging World Championships are held in the sports birth place – Upperthong Village, well worth a visit. We have created our own regional event.

The sport is to be played with the upmost of British sportsmanship and a large smattering of sense of humour. The premise is blindingly simple – all competitors have to do is wang (Yorkshire for throw) a Wellington boot as far as possible within defined boundary lines, from a standing or running start. It’s pretty much the same as the javelin event in the Olympics with the exception that a welly is unlikely to ever skewer an unexpecting judge or spectator.

History of egg throwing...

History of egg throwing

In 1322, so the story goes, Swaton’s new abbot was the only resident who owned chickens. To encourage his parishioners to attend church, he doled out eggs. When the river flooded, barring residents from attending church, the monks threw the eggs over the river. From
there, it apparently became good, wholesome fun that townspeople partook in for the next 700 years.

Current world egg throwing record according to The World Egg Throwing Federation May 19, 2013 the Irish ‘Wild’ Willie O’Donevan (tosser) and ‘Big’ Warren McElhone (Catcher) set a new world record at the Irish National Open of 71.2 meters.
